From May to October, the Outdoor Drama at the Shepherd of the Hills starts nightly at 8pm. The Outdoor Drama is a reenactment of the story in the book of Harold Bell Wright. In the story, you will come to know Dad Howitt, a newcomer to the Ozarks with a kind heart but with a troubled past. The native people in the hills, are deeply interconnected with the past and future life of Dad Howitt. Some of the natives – Old Matt is a giant mountain man with sad memories; Sammy Lane, a beautiful backwoods girl with the mind of a lady and with a spirit of a rebel; and Little Pete, a boy who has a surprising parentage; and many other folks in the hills.
The setting of the story is in the late 1800s. The story will bring you many twists and turns that will leave you confused about the things to happen next. This beautiful drama features not only actors and actresses, but also horses. A well-known troublemaker in the neigShowtimerhood by the name Wash Gibbs, will show a good impression as he rides on a big white horse (known as Egor around the barn). Ace, a horse with blue eyes and Twister with a crooked ear, portray the play both as Baldknobber horses. A beautiful girl Sammy Lane makes a quite entrance riding on Smokie, her white pony. During intermission, the audience will have a chance to be a part of the show – Old Matt will invite some of the audience to come down on stage to join the party.
The set of the Outdoor Drama at the Shepherd of the Hills is wide and huge – but it is beautifully laid out in such a way that every spectator enjoys a comfortable seat in the amphitheater. The set of the show features open square dancing floor, a steam engine replica, an antique gristmill, a small cabin, and many more. The set features many entrances that will keep the audience wonder where to enter to see the characters ride up and run out next. On your visit to the Shepherd of the Hills, you will take a homestead tour in a tram that will take you around the set.
