Each year, a flock of visitors come to Silver Dollar City’s Bluegrass and BBQ Festival to experience one of the most unique entertainments of live bluegrass music. The Bluegrass portion of the festival features over 50 bands performing hundreds of live entertainment shows during the 16-day celebration of the festival. The traditional and contemporary forms of music can be kept alive in the hearts of people of all ages.
When the festival was first organized in the 1950s as a genre, Bluegrass have continuously gained popularity as the generation that comes along, adds energy and spirit and the innovation that makes bluegrass music the best as ever. Singers and country Bluegrass musicians come from across the country to perform at the Silver Dollar City’s BBQ Festival. African influence can be heard in the rhythms of the music while the fiddle music can be heard with the influence by the Irish and Scots.
The bluegrass festival today features award-winning artists such as Rhonda Vincent (who is dubbed by the Wall Street Journal as the “Queen of Bluegrass Music”); Grascals (the Grammy-nominated group); Blue Highway (the IBMA Vocal Group of the Year); Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver (6-time IBMA Vocal Group of the Year winners); the Boxcars (featuring 9-time IBMA Mandolin Player of the Year and 5-time Grammy winner); and the Gibson Brothers (winner of the 2012 IBMA Entertainer of the Year. Plus many guests performers who are up-and-coming bands in bluegrass, such as the Snyder Family Band, The Bankesters, the Monroeville, and the Hillbenders.
Since last year, bluegrass music has been enjoyed by land and by lake. Enjoy a boat trip with the Bluegrass Cruises that are featured on board the Showboat Branson Belle. This river cruise features performances by Monroe Crossing on May 24 and by the Larry Stephenson Band on May 25, and the Special Consensus on May 26. These fabulous shows aboard the Showboat Branson Belle include a three-course meal and a lake excursion.
This Bluegrass & BBQ Festival in Silver Dollar City features two national competitions: The 7th Annual National Single Mic Championship, May 18 (highlighting performance skills as bands gather around a single microphone and balances their sound by moving away or toward it); and the Youth In Bluegrass Band Competition, May 25 (this encourages and promotes amateur bluegrass musicians 21 years and younger and compete each other for cash prizes).
