james-river-springfieldIf you have spent any time in the Ozarks, chances are that you have heard about popular bodies of water in the region like Table Rock Lake, Lake of the Ozarks and Lake Springfield.  Well, have you heard about the Ozarks rivers?  This part of the country is home to many beautiful rivers that sustain complex ecosystems and play a vital role in the health and culture of the Ozarks.  Nature lovers from across the country will be enthralled with the natural beauty these rivers have to offer!

James River:  The James River, a good stretch of which is located in Springfield, Mo, is a popular recreational river in the Ozarks.  Outdoor enthusiasts can often be found kayaking or tube-floating on this scenic river.  One of the most well-traveled routes for float trips passes by the famous ‘Hooten Town’ on the shores of the James River – in fact, local lore says that ‘float trips’ actually originated here on the James River, courtesy of area fishermen!  This river is 130 miles long, and contains an unusual green stain from copper-fixing bacteria present in the waters.

Current River: The Current River is settled in the southeast portion of the Ozarks, and contains several tributaries in both Missouri and Arkansas.  IT is 184 miles long and begins at Montauk State Park.  The Current is one of the milder Ozarks rivers as far as rapids go – it is considered very gentle with only class 1 rapids.  Dolomite bluffs, natural springs and caves make this river stunning at any time of the year.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways:  This national park was the first to protect a river system – and any outdoorsman or woman will appreciate that natural beauty being preserved here!  The Ozark National Scenic Riverways encompasses the Current and the Jacks Fork Rivers, and preserves these famous bodies of water for kayaking, floating, fishing and more.  Besides the two beautiful rivers, the park is also home to hundreds of freshwater springs, caves, trails and historic sites such as Alley Mill.  This national park offers nature loving guests camping and canoe rentals, hiking, horseback riding opportunities, and more.
